Very Green Spirulina Smoothie

Very Green Spirulina Smoothie

I recently bought spirulina powder to start a treatment, and the first taste (and smell) I had was not very pleasant. So I decided to add it in a smoothie to make it easy to ingest on a daily basis. Sorry, there is nothing I can do about the terrible smell…

First of all, as I’m by no means a health specialist, I highly recommend to check if taking spirulina supplements is safe for you. People with certain autoimmune conditions and diseases must avoid taking spirulina, pregnant women and women that are breast feeding too. It’s also important to make sure that the spirulina you’re buying is coming from a safe place. Here is a very interesting article about the health benefits and nutrition facts of spirulina.

You should avoid drinking coffee and tea when having spirulina as they highly reduce the iron absorption. It is recommended to space out tea and coffee intake a few hours apart. On the other hand, combining spirulina with vitamin C is going to help iron absorption. That’s why I add lime juice in the smoothie that can be replaced by any citrus fruit. You can also start a vitamin C treatment at the same time or simply eat ingredients that are high in vitamin C.

This smoothie brings a lot of nutrients and antioxidants, not only because of the spirulina but also because of the avocado, the banana and the nut butter. I didn’t indicate the quantity of spirulina I use in the recipe just because it’s up to you. I’m doing a 6 weeks treatment and as I read that it’s better to take it gradually, I’m doing 1/4 tsp daily the first week, 1/2 tsp the second and 1 tsp until the end of the treatment. Again, do some researches and see what’s best for you.
